A joint initiative between unions and a housing association in Blaenau Gwent has given workers access to a multi skills training programme, helping them to upskill and learn a wide range of trades. The new skills gained have meant that workers have been able to offer a wider range of repairs for tenants in fewer visits. Staff at Swn-y-Mor residential home in Port Talbot have received Welsh language training thanks to the support of UNISON’s Connecting Learners project. Connecting Learners is a Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) project that is funded by Welsh Government and run by the public sector union, UNISON. Karen Fisher, who is the project manager, identified that Welsh language skills were a key training need for workers in health and social care.

Janine Bennett is a support worker for Cartrefi Cymru who was recently able to attend palliative care training thanks to the support of the Wales Union Learning Fund. Janine spoke to us to tell us about the difference the course made to the care she was able to offer a terminally ill woman whom she supported through end of life care. New research carried out by the TUC has revealed that the UK’s network of trade union health and safety reps not only help to reduce injuries and ill-health at work, but save the economy many millions of pounds. Workplaces that have a union presence have a 24 per cent lower rate of injuries than non-unionised workplaces. To explain what the health and safety rep role involves and why it is so vital in keeping us safe at work, UNISON health and safety rep Angie Roberts took part in a case study to tell us more.

As a lead Union Learning Rep for the Communication Workers Union, Jan James has organised a huge variety of learning opportunities for hundreds of her colleagues at BT and Openreach in South Wales. From IT and keyboard skills, to conflict management, mental health, stress and dementia awareness, staff at both companies have benefitted from the wide range of courses on offer. Jan spoke to us about her latest iniative, offering First Aid and CPR training to all staff, and how the training helped one of her colleagues in a real life emergency.
